History of Ballarat The Wadawurrung people, an Indigenous Australian group, initially settled around Ballarat. The first Europeans to discover the place was a group of six Scottish squatters from Geelong led by Somerville Learmonth in 1837. They called it "Ballaarat", a Wathaurong Aboriginal word for the location. The meaning of this word is unknown; however, it widely implies "resting place". With 14,000 new dwellings and up to 40,000 more residents, the city government in 2010 authorized the Ballarat West Growth Area Plan. Today, Ballarat is on the verge of a new golden age, with its population expected to increase by more than 60,000 people by 2040.
