The city was named in honour of John Korff, who had called the city Korff’s harbour after the region sheltered him during a storm. The name was later changed due to particular circumstances. In the early 1990s, the area became an important production centre for timber. Much before the start of the railway line, coastal shipping was the only way to transport heavy items. In the later years, timber tramways were built, which connected timber-getting regions to other parts.
