A prosperous city located in Lower Hunter Valley in NSW, this is also the seat of Maitland City Council. The town is situated around 166 km away from the northern side of Sydney. It is located at least 35 km out on the northwestern side of Newcastle. As per the 2016 census, the city recorded a population of 78,015. History of Maitland Maitland is said to be a culmination of 3 towns that came into existence almost simultaneously. These regions are West Maitland which is now known as Maitland, East Maitland and Morpeth. Morpeth was a remote town which was founded by Lieutenant Close, who was a war veteran. All three towns were functioning like separate municipalities. The city got its name Maitland in the year 1885, named in honour of Sir George Maitland. The existing city was finally proclaimed in 1945 after the amalgamation of 3 local government regions.
