History of Parkes NSW Parkes is part of the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri people. Parkes was founded in 1862 and was considered a reef- and alluvial-gold centre. In December 1873, this area was officially renamed Parkes in honour of Sir Henry Parkes. In 1873, Henry Parkes visited the town. He is recognised for playing an essential role in making Australia a unified and federated country. During World War II, this town was the location of training bases- RAAF Station Parkes and RAAF No.18 Inland Aircraft Fuel Depot (IAFD), closed on 14 August 1944. Parkes NSW also gained massive attention during the gold rush of the 1870s onwards. And today, it is home to several modern mining companies.
