Located in the north-western part of NSW, Tamworth is the administrative centre of NSW. It is situated on the Peel River and in the government region of Tamworth Regional Council. As per the census of June 2018, the city recorded a population of 42,872. Tamworth is said to be the first region in Australia that installed electric street lights. No wonder the city is also referred to as 'First Town of Lights'. It is also considered the National Equine Capital of Australia.

In 1834, around 6000 sheep belonging to the Australian Agricultural Company were brought to this region. By 1851, the European population was about 254 in Tamworth. Many hospitals, railway stations, and other facilities opened in the next few years.
