Kurnai/Gunai people occupied this Gippsland region for more than 20,000 years. Dr Edmund Hobson, along with Edward Hobson, had purchased land, which they referred to as Traralgon. Much later in 1964, Traralgon was proclaimed a city. In 1873, the mechanic's institute and the old town hall were demolished.
