This majestic block is located in the historic town of Balfour. History; Alluvial Tin is thought to have been discovered as early as 1875 and mined from 1883. However, it was the discovery of a copper deposit in 1908 that drove the establishment of the township of Balfour. Copper was mined intensively between 1908 - 1912 with Balfour's population peaking at 900 during the boom years. From 1913 the boom time began to stagnate and Balfour was all but abandoned by 1924 where the town and the 20km horse drawn tramway to Temma Harbour was lost to time and the Tarkine Rainforest. Sylvia McArthur a young girl from Balfour who often wrote to "The Weekly Courier" in Launceston describe Balfour in her February letter of 1912. "In reply to your request to tell you all about Balfour, I shall be very pleased to comply so far as I am able. The township is situated on a piece of very good chocolate soil, which rises about 100 feet above the level of the button grass flats, and thus enables each place to have a good garden and be well drained. The scenery close to the house is very nice, on one side; as the Franklin (sic) River wends its way within one mile of the astern side, with numerous little fern gullies and glades running down towards the rugged bank of the stream. On the western side, right on to the sea; is open button grass plains, which for the most part of the year are uninteresting in appearance, but look nice at present, as there are many wild flowers blooming among the heath. The business places consist of one hotel – the other was burnt down two days before Christmas – a store, a butcher's shop, one bakery, besides boarding houses and private buildings, a police station, and a state school." Sylvia's grave can still be found at the Balfour Cemetery overlooking the Franklin River. This block sits on the edge of town and is 900m2(approx). The nearest major town is Smithton (50km) with a population of 3100. A unique opportunity to own a piece of this historic town deep in Tassie's Tarkine rainforest.
