Overview Locate 27 km south of Sydney’s CBD, Gymea Bay is a coastal suburb in New South Wales. The Sutherland Shire looks after the local administration of the area. It was earlier part of the neighbouring Gymea suburb but made a separate one in 2008. Two creeks define its eastern and western borders while the bay lies to the south.
Living in Gymea Bay Gymea Bay is a picturesque suburb well adored for its coastal location and primarily residential character. History of Gymea Bay Gymea in the Aboriginal language refers to a tall perennial flowering lily plant. In 1858, W.A.B. Geaves named the area Gymea after the plant while surveying it. The Port Hacking River facilitated the growth Gymea area while the coast attracted many settlers. It got a railway in 1885. In the 1940s, Gymea Bay became an essential coastal recreational centre. In 2008, the NSW Geographical Names Board recommended the bifurcation of the Gymea suburb into two, and the southern part bordering the Gymea Bay became a separate suburb named after it.
