In September 1797, the land's first European settler, Lt. John Shortland, started to explore the area. Shortland's discovery of Newcastle was accidental as he was initially sent to search for convicts who had seized a vessel called "Cumberland".
Newcastle was originally a penal settlement and had a reputation as a "hell hole", where the most dangerous convicts were located. In the year 1822, the area began to open for farming, and free settlers began to pour in the land.
