Overview Richmond is a suburb in New South Wales positioned 65 km northwest of Sydney. This outer Sydney locality is under the administration of the Hawkesbury city council. Richmond lies next to the Blue Mountains and is the starting point of Bells Line of Road. The area is surrounded by a eucalypt forest, the last remaining home of endangered swift parrots and regent honeyeaters. At the 2016 census, Richmond had 5,482 people.

History of Richmond Richmond is the oldest place after Sydney and Paramatta to host European settlements in Australia. Located on the fertile Hawkesbury River plain, Richmond was originally home to the Darug people. The first European advent to the area was recorded in 1789. It was named Richmond Hill to honour British military officer and statesman the third Duke of Richmond. By 1799, Richmond was the biggest producer of grains in colonial Australia. The RAAF set up a base in 1923 and maintained a top-secret bunker during World War II.
