History of Richmond Richmond is the oldest place after Sydney and Paramatta to host European settlements in Australia. Located on the fertile Hawkesbury River plain, Richmond was originally home to the Darug people. The first European advent to the area was recorded in 1789. It was named Richmond Hill to honour British military officer and statesman the third Duke of Richmond. By 1799, Richmond was the biggest producer of grains in colonial Australia. The RAAF set up a base in 1923 and maintained a top-secret bunker during World War II.
