The suburb has the second largest population in the Lake Macquarie region, with 7,614 residents (based on the 2016 census).

Warners Bay was named after Jonathan Warner, a retired army lieutenant who was granted vast portions of the land in 1829. By 1849, Warner subdivided his property and advertised the area as allotments. However, lots in the suburb remained unsold for a couple of years due to the Great Depression.
Developments in the area remained slow up to the first half of the 20th century where Warners Bay became a popular residential area.
