Built in 1880, making the miners cottage approximately 140 years old, 10 Foxlow Street has character and charm for all to see. The current owner purchased the home in 1991 and has been working on it ever since. Using mostly recycled and repurposed materials, the owner has left no stone unturned on this renovated quaint cottage. Walking through the entry of the home, you are greeted with a gorgeous arbor hand-crafted by the owner, using Black Bean panels removed from the National Library of Australia, as well as some wood parts from the Belconnen Hotel refurbishment. This arbor takes you into the main carpeted living area, with large re-built brick fireplace. The Canberra Bricks were salvaged from the Woden High School, with some colored bricks being seen as remanence of an old school mural painted by students. Bricks from the original fireplace can be seen around the mantel and the timber top was milled from an old telegraph pole. The skirting board around the room was from a house in Braddon, along with the outside leadlight lantern at the front door. The kitchen was built from recycled timber and paneling removed from Girls Grammar School in Forrest, ACT. The tiles in the kitchen were originals from the old Civic Swimming Pool. The cupboard in the kitchen and hallway were purchased from country auctions, along with the red cedar front door and the hallway door. Off the kitchen there is a bright sunroom/dining room, a great space for having breakfast in the sun reading the newspaper. There are three bedrooms, all carpeted and with refurbished or hand-made timber window frames, leaving all these spaces full of light throughout the day. The main bathroom is spacious with matching slate tiles from the kitchen and large claw-foot bathtub/shower and separate toilet. Through a quirky hand-made leadlight back door, there is access from the bathroom/laundry space to the paved patio at the back of the home. This home is complimented by a newly added two-car garage with adjoined workshop/man cave. There is also a couple of sheds, leaving ample storage space for tools, building materials, wood storage, and even a chook shed. Over the last 25 years the property has been re-stumped, re-roofed, re-wired, re-plumbed and some flooring has also been replaced. Not to mention the recent re-painting of the entire home – inside and out. With so much Canberra and Captains Flat history, this property is a must see.
