Maryborough, one of Queensland's oldest townships, with a bold history nestled within her heritage buildings and myriad of festivals and local events. Maryborough's port was used as the primary entry point to the colony of Queensland for immigrants from all over the world in the nineteenth century - before the birth of Australia as we know it today. It wasn't until years later that it became celebrated as a heritage township for its attractive buildings and historic residences, each meticulously restored. Today, Maryborough radiates community spirit, with vibrant art and cultural centres, excellent schools, and amenities of a metropolitan city without traffic and noise. In 1913 tenders were called to erect a two-storey residence for Doctor Henry Lee Garde. Prominent architect Frederick Herbert Faircloth answered the call. Faircloth opened operations in Bundaberg in 1893 and designed most of the city's buildings and several heritage-listed buildings across the state. Before his death, he supervised the erection of new Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches in Bundaberg. In 1914, as the world entered World War I, 'Whybee' was completed. Constructed initially on John Street, Maryborough, opposite the former St. Stephen's hospital and behind the St. Stephen's Uniting Church, 'Whybee' was built with a doctor's surgery and principal rooms occupying much of the lower floor. In later years, the house and surgery served doctors Woodhead and Hooper. Doctor Hooper saw the top storey demolished following the end of his practice in the 1950s. The remaining lower level was disassembled on its former site and moved to its current site, circa 1970. The home now sits proudly on her stunning 4,688 sqm outlook at 166 Queen Street, Maryborough.
