History of Alawa Alawa was settled by the Aboriginal tribe from the southern tributaries called Alawa, and this is where the suburb earned its name. The establishment of the area started in the latter years of the 1960s. The names of the streets here have a history as well. Most of these were taken from the early locals and workers of the old Post office, who died during the 1942 Darwin bombing. Some routes were named after the people and boats used during the Palmerston settlement.
