History of Brighton
On 29 August 1840, Henry Dendy purchased a massive land of Port Phillip for one pound per acre. He arrived in Australia in February of 1841 to claim his land. His property was then called "Dendy's Special Survey". The following year, a town was surveyed in the area and subdivided lots were put up for sale. Sales were slow until after the depression, when Brighton became the third most populated area in Port Phillip.
The suburb's name was derived from the seaside resort Brighton in England.
