History of Elsternwick Elsternwick got its name from Elster, the largest estate in the area. Before 1851, it was called Red Bluff. The first survey of Elsternwick dates back to 1856, while the village had a post office in 1860 and a railway station next year. Schools and commercial areas grew adjacent to the station area, and the locality got two tram lines by the early 1900s. It was home to the ABC studios until 2017.
