History of Toorak Toorak is named after Toorak House, which was built in 1849 by Italian merchant James Jackson. Before completing the current Government House, Toorak House served as a residence for Captain Sir Charles Hotham, Victoria’s first governor, and his other successors.

Around the late 1800s, many elaborate mansions were built in Toorak, with the suburb becoming a favoured location of Australia’s wealthiest.

Today, only a few 19th-century residences remain in the suburb, including the Illawarra House and the most expensive house in Melbourne, Coonac.
