History of Prahran The area was first named “Pur-ra-ran” by George Langhorne in 1837. The name was interpreted as a compound of two Aboriginal words, “a land partially surrounded by water.” Still, later on, the name was interpreted as “Birrarung,” the name for the Yarra River. George Langhorne then told the Surveyor-General about the name, but what they had written was its latest name, Prahran.
