History of Albert Park Boonwurrung Aboriginals were original inhabitants of the suburb before the European arrival. The British settlers drained swamps and lagoons to make it arable in the mid-1830s. It became a military training and haunting ground in the 1840s, and an artificial lake came up. Following a survey in 1854, the government made land grants to the most influential people in Melbourne.

In 1864, the locals named it Albert Park after Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. By 1885, it had cricket, lawn bowls and tennis clubs. Albert Park saw rapid development with gardens and town squares similar to London. St Vincent Gardens and Albert Park, and Lake today are home to many unique tree specimens.
