History Aldinga Beach is an outer southern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It lies within the City of Onkaparinga and has the postcode 5173. At the 2016 census, Aldinga Beach had a population of 10,557. In 1856, Aldinga Beach was the site of the first Australian settlement by Europeans. The area was originally settled by sheep graziers, who sheared their sheep and sold wool to the navy. In 1882, Aldinga became a fishing village, and by 1909 there were 300 fishermen living in Aldinga. It wasn't until 1915 that the land was subdivided for housing with the first house being built in 1921. In 1940, a fire destroyed Aldinga's pier. Aldinga Beach lies about a kilometre west of the smaller suburb of Aldinga. The beach is a well-known spot for surfing, swimming, scuba diving, and snorkelling during the summer months. It overlooks an aquatic reserve which has been created to safeguard a unique reef formation. About an hour south of Adelaide. The town was founded in 1857 and was known as Aldinga for many years, but the name was changed to Aldinga Beach in the late 1970s because of confusion with nearby Aldinga.
