Alexandra, located at the junction of the Maroondah Highway and Goulburn Valley Highway, is northeast of Victoria and 130 kilometres in the northeast of Melbourne. It is part of the local government area of the Shire of Murrindindi.
Living in Alexandra Alexandria's town centre is along the beautiful boulevard of Grant Street. The street is lined by several historical buildings dating back to the 1850s that have been preserved to their original glory. This was the time when gold was discovered and extensively mined in the area.
Alexandra today is an important commercial hub with several shopping centres for the surrounding villages of Taggerty, Acheron, and Thornton. The members of two clans of the Taungurong Aboriginal people were the original inhabitants of Alexandra. Alexandra was initially known as Red Gate Diggings or Redgate.
