History Alice Springs is a small town in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is located centrally in the continent, about halfway between the west coast and the east coast. The town was named after Alice Springs in South Australia. Alice Springs is 2 hours north of Uluru, 10 minutes south of the Tropic of Capricorn. The town is on the eastern side of the MacDonnell Ranges and has a population of about 18,000 people. In 1871 it was found that water was flowing underground from the MacDonnell Ranges to the east across Central Australia to the west coast. It was decided to establish a settlement near the range to take advantage of this water supply, (Aboriginal Australians had lived in the area for more than 50,000 years before then.) On 3rd September 1872, George Goyder, Surveyor-General of South Australia, laid out two townships which became Alice Springs and Tennant Creek.
