It is neighboured by the following localities: Majors Creek, Berlang, Reidsdale, Neringla, Monga, Buckenbowra, and Merricumbene. As of the 2016 census, the population of this town was 3,921.

History of Araluen The area of Araluen was primarily occupied by the Walbanga people, an Aboriginal Tribe. The Walbanga people named this area Araluen, meaning “water lily” or the “place of water lilies.” By 1822, the first Europeans had reached here and mapped it out by the late 1820s. By 1852, gold mining had begun around the present geographical boundaries of Araluen, known as the Araluen Creek.

During the gold rush of the 1850s, Araluen experienced a great rise in population. Although, this rise in population didn’t last long as many residents left due to a flash flood in 1860, which destroyed the town, killing 24 people. Since then, the population of Araluen has somewhat recovered.
