Overview Ararat is a suburb in the southwest part of Victoria, in Australia, and is also the administrative centre and the largest settlement in the Rural City of Ararat local government area. It is part of the Wannon Federal District. As of the 2016 census, the population of Ararat was 9,414.

History of Ararat The name “Ararat” was chosen by Horatio Wills, an Australian politician in 1841, and derived from Mount Ararat, located 10 kilometres southwest of the city. Gold was discovered in the area of Ararat in 1857, during the Victorian gold rush, and transformed into a prosperous town until the beginning of the 20th Century. Soon after, the population of Ararat started declining steadily. It was proclaimed as a city on 24 May 1950. The 1980s and the 1990s saw another decline in the population, but it has been recovering slowly.
