Overview Arcadia is a coastal suburb in the smallest of the four bays on Magnetic Island (also called Yunbenun) in the City of Townsville. The suburbs surrounding Arcadia are West Point, Horseshoe Bay, Florence Bay, and Nelly Bay. On the east and south of the suburb is the Coral Sea.
Living in Arcadia The suburb is predominantly residential and is a popular destination for tourists. Alma Bay and Geoffrey Bay are the most prominent locations in the area. Alma Bay is a favourite swimming spot for both locals and visitors. Amenities such as picnic tables, gas barbecue, children’s playground, toilets and changing areas are available here. Alma Bay is also popular for the ANZAC Day Commemorations that take place here annually.
Geoffrey Bay is declared as a Marine National Park Zone, so fishing and collecting are not allowed here. However, this area is good to explore during low tide and a well-known spot to feed rock wallabies.
There are currently no schools in Arcadia. The closest primary school is in the suburb of Nelly Bay, while the nearest secondary school is in the Townsville mainland.
History of Arcadia Not much is written about the history of Arcadia, the island where it is situated - Magnetic Island, got its name because of the “magnetic” effect that it had on the compass of Captain Cook’s ship when it passed the island in 1770. Since then, various explorations have been made into what caused the said anomaly, but nothing has been discovered.
