History of Austins ferry Developed as a locality in 1960, Austins Ferry got its name after James Austin(1766-1831). James was transported to Port Phillip as a convict along with his cousin John Earl. They arrived in Van Diemen's Land in 1804. When their sentences expired, both were given a small part of land towards the western shore of the River Derwent. In 1818, they initiated a ferry service there which turned out to be a punt. It was pretty convenient for travelling between Hobart and the northern regions. Consequently, the place became quite wealthy.
