History of Babinda Babinda is a word from the Indigenous Australian language that means "mountain". However, there are claims that the town's name is a Yidinji word that means "water".

Developments in Babinda began in 1914 when a state school was built here. A year after, the Babinda Post Office and the Babinda Sugar Mill opened in the town. It was also around this time when two churches - a Presbyterian church and a Catholic church were established. However, in 1918, a cyclone hit the town and left no building standing.
