Overview Bass Hill is a suburb of the local government area City of Canterbury-Bankstown in New South Wales, Australia. It is located 23 kilometres southwest of the Sydney central business district and is a South-western region’s part. According to the 2016 population census, 9,069 people were recorded in the area.
Living in Bass Hill Bass Hill is a beautiful place to live, and its main highlight is a 20,000 square metres (220,000 square feet) shopping centre named Bass Hill Plaza. This shopping centre is the size of a district and is located at 753 Hume Highway. It includes Kmart, Woolworths Supermarket, Aldi, a medical centre, a post office, and some specialty stores.
The suburb has three schools and is also home to many sporting fields such as cricket, cycling, athletics, hockey, soccer, and rugby league.
History of Ball Hill Bass Hill got its name from George Bass, a surgeon and explorer who was granted land in the region in 1798. He came there in 1795 on HMS Reliance and decided to explore parts of the colony. The region was originally known as Irish Town after Irish settlements, and in 1924, it became officially Bass Hill. In 1814, Liverpool Road was completed and development of the area began. Bass Hill was the location for a small transmitting station during World War II and it was operated by the RAAF.
