The Bateman family of Fremantle had a long History of involvement in the colony of Western Australia, commencing with John Bateman's arrival on board Medina in 1830. He was both postmaster and merchant, and he helped establish a whaling business at Bathers Beach. After his death in 1855, his sons took over the family business.
