History of Beechworth The Parish and Township plans for Beechworth were prepared, named, and certified by George D Smythe around 1828. The land of Beechworth was initially used by an early settler, David Reid, for grazing and was called the “Mayday Hills” until 1853. The post office opened on 1 May 1853 and was known as Spring Creek and renamed Beechworth on 1 January 1854. Beechworth saw a lot of increase in power, wealth, and importance during 1852-1857, as it was a significant gold mining site.
