History of Belgrave In February 1983, the area experienced the Ash Wednesday fires, which destroyed 238 houses and killed 21 people. The destruction was within the Belgrave South and Heights and Upper Beaconsfield area. The development of the site started in 1920 when the Post Office was opened. It was named South Belgrave and renamed Belgrave South in 1923. The Post office closed on May 22, 1977.
