Overview Bellingen is a tiny town located on the mid-north coast of NSW, Australia. It has a community of 7,571 people—according to the 2016 census—and can be found adjacent to Waterfall Way, Pacific Highway, and the North Coast railway line.

History of Bellingen The Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal people were the first to settle in Bellingen Shire. It was mistakenly called "Bellinger" due to a draughtsman who misread Clement Hodgkinson's handwritten "n" as "r." In the 1830s, the land of this town was mainly utilised for cutting timber and grazing sheep. Furthermore, the red cedar resources in the Bellingen Valley were almost exhausted by the early 1900s. Hence, the valley transformed into a dairy farming centre. Also, the native people were devastated by sickness and the incapacity to roam across the area, searching for traditional food sources. Not only that but a lot of them were murdered in their attempt to drive the cedar getters and colonists away from traditional Gumbaynggirr territory.
