Overview Bermagui is a suburb located on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia. It lies in the Bega Valley Shire, on the shores of the southern end of Horseshoe Bay. As recorded in the 2016 population census, 1,536 people called Bermagui their home.
Living in Bermagui Bermagui is a famous holiday and fishing suburb, located along the east coast, close to halfway between Sydney and Melbourne. There are many things to see and do in the suburb. Driving around the headland, you will see spectacular panoramic ocean views at Bermagui Lookout. Other attractions in the area include deep-sea fishing, Montreal Goldfield, Cuttagee Lake, Gulaga National Park and Goura Nature Reserve, Mount Gulaga, and more. The suburb has a public school and other amenities.
History of Bermagui Bermagui takes its name from the Dyirringanj word, permageua, which means ‘canoe with paddles’. In 1888, a wharf was built in Horseshoe Bay aimed at the coastal trade, and the port was serviced by the Illawarra and South Coast Steam Navigation Company. In 1880, a boat disappeared during a trip from Bermagui carrying the Government geologist Lamont Young and four others. The boat was found about 15 km north of Bermagui near Mystery Bay. The Bay was named so because of the disappearance of that boat. The development of the area started in 1959 when a fishing harbour was built by the Public Works Department.
