Overview Birregurra is a small but thriving suburb in Gulidjan County in Victoria, Australia. It is located approximately 130 km southwest of Melbourne and 64 km west of Geelong. This suburb belongs to the Colac Otway Shire and Surf Coast Shire local government areas. It has a population of 848 based on the 2016 census. To get here from Colac, you must travel east via the Princes Highway. It is bordered by the western bank of the Barwon River.

History of Birregurra The name of the suburb is derived from an aboriginal word that means kangaroo camp. The suburb area had its first actual settlement in 1839, following the establishment of the Buntingdale Mission Station. Before that, Birregurra was settled mainly by squatters. It was fully established as a township in 1861 following the construction of bridges crossing the Barwon River and the Birregurra Creek.
