History Birrong is a suburb of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown, in New South Wales. It is 22 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district. It was originally named by Aboriginal people who called it Birrong, meaning 'star'. The first settlers in Birrong were Joseph Hyde Potts and his family who were granted land in 1835. Development increased with the opening of the railway in 1928. The area that was subject to flooding was drained as relief work during the Great Depression (1929-1934). The post office opened in 1955.
