History of Boonooroo The town’s name is an Aboriginal word that means “brigalow tree”. Boonooroo State School, the first school in the area, opened in 1911 but closed in 1931. The school then re-opened as a provisional school in 1946, which again became Boonooroo State School in 1960. The school closed again after a year.
