History Bourkelands was a very popular suburb of Sydney, Australia. The suburb had a great range of houses and apartments and everyone loved living there. However, in 2008 the Australian Government introduced the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme which caused many factories to close down and people lost their jobs. Bourkelands became a ghost town and the population dropped dramatically. As more and more businesses closed in Bourkelands and people lost their jobs, the number of residents decreased dramatically. People had no choice but to move away from this suburb until it became what it is today: a ghost town with few residents or businesses. Bourkelands was first used as farmland for sheep and cattle until the late 1970s when it was turned into a residential suburb. It has since become a popular place to live with many people moving to the area and an increase in development and new businesses.
