There are plenty of good schools in the town, and many trace their origins back to the 1870s and 1880s. Bowen is emerging as a critical commercial hub around the deep-water port at Abbott Point. History of Bowen Bowen was an Aboriginal area when Captain James Cook's voyage passed adjacent to the Gloucester Island off its coast in 1770. James Morrill, a shipwreck survivor, was the first non-native to live in the area in 1850. Ten years later, George Elphinstone Dalrymple landed in Bowen while looking for the mouth of the Burdekin River. Impressed by a large number of native wells, they set up a permanent settlement there. It grew despite conflict with Aboriginals and was named after Sir George Bowen, the first governor of Queensland, in the 1860s. With schools and other institutions' coming up, Bowen became a big urban area by the early 1900s.
