Overview About 42 km north of Sydney's CBD, Box Hill officially became a suburb in July 2020. It forms a geographic part of the Hill District area and is under the administrative control of the Baulkham Hills Shire.
Living in Box Hill A family-friendly locality, Box Hill was among the best-performing Sydney suburbs in 2020. History of Box Hill The place was named Box Hill because of many hunting boxes atop local hills during the early days of European settlement. Box Hill was initially inhabited by the Darug Aboriginals before the Rouse family set up an estate in 1801. Richard Rouse's farm prospered using convict labour. His daughter married the son of Samuel Terry, who was New South Wales' richest man and purchased a large estate in the Box Hill area in 1831. The newly married couple selected Box Hill and grew wheat there on a large scale alongside animal husbandry.
By the early 1920s, Box Hill was home to several homesteads. After the second world war, the area was subdivided, and many residential areas came up. It became a tourist attraction for city people with hills, orchards and dairy farms. The 1970s saw Block Hill transforming from an agricultural hub to a modern suburb.
