According to the national census taken in 2016, Braidwood has a population of 3,921 people.

History of Braidwood Walbanga peoples were the original inhabitants of Braidwood, which was located in Yuin Nation. The town served the aboriginal people by providing them with fruits, vegetables, root crops, etc. In the 1820s, Europeans discovered Braidwood and officially surveyed the land later in 1839. Around the 1830s, a surgeon-superintendent named Dr Thomas Braidwood Wilson was granted a lot in the area. Braidwood’s name was taken after the late doctor.
