History of Breakwater The name of the suburb was derived from a rock ford that was built in 1837. The first magistrate captain in Geelong constructed it to help people cross the Barwon River. At the same time, the ford helped supply the town with fresh river water by preventing the saltwater from flowing into it. Due to the proximity of the industrial area to the river, it is prone to flooding.
