Overview Broadford is a small town located in central Victoria, Australia. It is the headquarters of the Shire of Mitchell local government area. The suburb is located around 73 kilometres north of Melbourne and built on the banks of Sunday Creek. At the 2016 census, 4,319 people were living in Broadford.
Living in Broadford As Broadford lies on the major transport routes between Sydney and Melbourne, tourists often visit it. The suburb is home to the Victorian State Motorcycle Complex, famous for having both road and off-road tracks. The complex also hosts National riding events. The town centre is built around High Street, and this street is lined with native trees. It also has many shops and a supermarket.
History of Broadford It is believed that the Taungurong people were traditional owners of Broadford, and they inhabited a large portion of the area. The first Europeans to visit the town were Hamilton Hume and Captain William Hilton Hovell in 1824. Whereas the first European occupier of the site was Lt. Col. Henry White. As per records, he was the first landholder in the town, and the first survey map also shows Colonel White’s Station on Sunday Creek. In 1858, gold was discovered in the nearby Reedy Creek. Further development started in 1852 with the establishment of the Post Office and later in 1891 with the opening of the Broadford Courier printing office.
