History of Bruce The suburb of Bruce is named in honour of Stanley Viscount Bruce, the eighth Prime Minister of Australia, who was also the first chancellor of the Australian National University. It was gazetted as a suburb on 6 June 1968. The streets of Bruce were named after people and places associated with Australian Tertiary education.
