Berry was a Scottish surgeon, explorer, and merchant who was given 100 acres of land grant and 100 convicts to establish the first European settlement on the southern coast of New South Wales. Patrick Smith was born in Catala, Ireland. Some also believed Callala came from the word "Kallala", which means "fish."
