Overview Canungra is a rural suburb situated in the Scenic Rim Region. It is in the Gold Coast hinterland, 32 kilometres west of the Gold Coast and around 75 kilometres away from Brisbane. Neighbouring Canungra is the localities of Biddaddabba, Benobble, Witheren, Nundooinbah, and Sarabah.
As of the 2016 census, the town has a population of 1,229.
Living in Canungra In its early years, Canungra was known for timber. Today, it has a thriving tourism industry and a small but growing wine industry.
Found in this scenic town are farm stays, bed and breakfasts and some cabin accommodations. Vineyards are also well-visited in this area.

History of Canungra The suburb is known as the "Valley of Owls" as one of Australia's most notable owls, the boobook owl, was found in this area. Also, the origin of the town's name was from the Aboriginal term "Caningera", which means "small owls."
Officially, however, Canungra was derived from the Yugambeh word "gungunga", which means "a long flat" or "clearing."
One of the first establishments in the town was a provisional school that opened in 1889. The school became the Canungra Upper State School and was renamed Canungra State School in 1912. The suburb's post office opened in 1907.
