History of Cardiff The original inhabitants of the land where Cardiff is located are the Awabakal Aboriginal people.

During the European settlement, the Cardiff area was granted to George Weller in 1833. The locality was called Winding Creek after the stream that wound its way from northwest and southeast across the land. By the late part of the 19th century, more people were attracted to settle in the Winding Creek area due to coal mining.

It was in 1889 when the locality adopted the name Cardiff after the capital of Wales.
