The suburb is located 182 km north of Cairns and 1,500 km north-northwest of Brisbane. This town shares borders with a few other suburbs like Ellerbeck, Carruchan, Lumholtz, and Damper Creek. It is also bordered by the Coral Sea and Hinchinbrook Channel to the east.

History of Cardwell Cardwell was officially proclaimed as a town in 1864. During this time, the area is remote and isolated. It served as a port for livestock and was even named the administrative seat of the former Cardwell Shire local government area. The population of this town doubled during the post-war period and continued to grow in the succeeding decades.
