History Castletown is a suburb in Esperance, Western Australia. It was gazetted in 1965. In 1842, settlers from England established a small port on the southern shore of King George Sound near what is now called Point Walter.The colonists came to Western Australia to make a new life for themselves and found a perfect place for their industry. The people who built Castletown were free, educated and adventurous. They established a trading post and whaling station to serve as a centre for trade with the Aborigines. In 1847, the town was officially named Castletown, after Lord Walter Fitzgerald who represented King George III in Ireland.In 1848, gold was discovered in quartz rocks at Kalgoorlie. This discovery led to an influx of people into Western Australia and Castletown became an important stopping off spot.
