History of Chippendale The original settlers of the area are the Gadigal people from the Dharug Nation. The suburb was named after the owner of the land, William Chippendale, who was granted a 95-acre estate in 1819. Chippendale then sold his property to emancipist and businessman Solomon Levey, whose heirs sold most of the land to William Hutchinson.
