Coburg is a Melbourne municipality situated 9 kilometres north of the city's central business district (CBD). Coburg is one of Melbourne's most diverse and multicultural neighbourhoods. The area was initially known as Pentridge, after the notorious jail of the same name, which was purchased and refurbished in the 1990s following the discovery of Ned Kelly's remains. Also, it has gained a new life following the jail sale, growing into a lush family suburb with a vibrant mixed community. Bell Street, the main strip, is lined with world-class Italian and Greek restaurants, cafés serving strong, inexpensive espresso, and quaint old-world taverns.
History of Coburg
Robert Hoddle explored Coburg in 1837–1838, and he stated that a Mr Hyatt owned a sheep station and cabin on the Merri Creek's east bank, near Outlook Road. Hoddle designated a 327-acre village reserve for the neighbourhood and two roadways: Bell Street West and Pentridge Road, subsequently known as Sydney Road. Furthermore, Henry Foot, who resided around Merri Creek, called the location Pentridge around 1840. It was named after Foot's wife's birthplace, Pentridge, Dorset, England.
